E4 - WF Layout Analysis & Final Forecast

This is the second phase of the Weather Forecast exercise. The objective is to help you see that the visual syntax and hierarchy of a typographic message has a direct relationship to the aesthetic balance of the layout of the text on the page.

Group the elements of each one of your six weather layout explorations together and position each layout on its own page. Using layers, investigate the spatial relationships of the layout of the elements of text and the page, as Vectors and as Shapes as shown:

Text Layout:

Layout Vector Analysis:

Layout Shape Analysis I:

Layout Shape Analysis II:

Complete the two-step visual analysis of each of your layouts. If the visual hierarchy and syntax of a layout and/or the spatial relationship of space and text is weak and/or not working, then re-layout the message so that it expresses the message both visually and syntactically.

Choose your top four Weather Forecast layouts out of the six, and compose them along with their vector and shape analyses, two per page, on vertical 11x17 sheets of paper.  The Weather Forecast layouts will be reduced down to 4 x 4". Stack the layouts as follows—the type layout on top, the vector analysis in the middle, and the shape analysis on the bottom.  Add a 1" margin on the top and sides of the page, as well as between each layout, and a 2" margin bottom.

These final four Weather Forecast layouts, along with their visual analysis, are due on your blog the beginning of class Thursday, February 21st, as well as printed out and hung on the crit wall.

We will critique your layouts in class. Remember that your final layouts are visual messages (Weather Forecasts) and just type explorations. Choose a single layout which is the most expressive and communicative of your Weather Forecasts. Make final adjustments to the design, stressing information hierarchy and visual syntax. Aligning elements up visually and syntactically with one another within the square picture frame will help the hierarchical type express the visual message.

Print out your final Weather Forecast the original size of 7.5 x 7.5", centered on an 8.5 x 11" sheet of paper. Post the final layout on your blog in the E4 post, and hang the final design up on the hallway.
This is due by the end of class, Thursday, February 21st.

Please note that you have an assignment reading in the Layout textbook (R4), which will be due the beginning of class on Tuesday, February26.
