E1 - Comping Type

Using three sheets of tracing paper and a pencil, trace and/or comp the following “R” letters at 100% of their size. Try to research the name of the font, its weight, and its point size.  The objective of the exercise is not to replicate the quality of typesetting, but to become familiar with the formal characteristics and parts of letterforms. As you draw the the letters, note the unique structure of each, with paying particular attention to the different line, shape and negative space characteristics of the three different fonts as you draw them.

Next, using the following alphabet sheets, trace and/or comp at least one full alphabet using Myriad or Garamond. On a separate sheet of paper set your name in all three fonts, Garamond, Myriad and  and Bodoni. Be sensitive to letter spacing, word spacing and the negative space surrounding the names.

Scan and post your sketches to your blog under Class Assignments and title and label the post Comping Type.  The final comps are due on your blog Tuesday, January 15th at the beginning of class. Also pst your original tissue comps on the crit wall by the beginning of class.
